Why wait until tomorrow to build emission-free, when it’s possible today? In an interview with a trade magazine Fresh off the Press Timo Broersen, who oversees projects and R&D at Finch Buildings, discusses modular construction using wood as a concrete solution for an industry that still too often puts sustainability on the back burner.
His drive stemmed from both fascination and frustration. After completing his degree in architecture, Timo quickly realized that concrete is still the norm and that conversations about sustainability often stall at the very first syllable. At Finch, we take a different approach: with projects that deliver results.
In the article, Timo addresses persistent misconceptions about modular timber construction: that it is too expensive, inflexible, or fails to meet building codes. With a large-scale project in Haarlem (322 wooden residential modules, 158 apartments), Finch, together with partners such as Elan Wonen, FARO, Maat, and HBB Groep, demonstrates how it can be done. This includes new connectors for faster assembly, plug-and-play installations, and a wide 5-meter module that cuts the number of transport and hoisting operations in half.
