BLOK is up and running. Three Finch modules have been stacked in Eindhoven to form a two-story pavilion, complete with a rooftop terrace. Over the next few days, the partners will put the finishing touches on the project so that BLOK will be ready to welcome visitors on Saturday, October 17, during Dutch Design Week.
A Framework for Innovation
BLOK was built using Finch Buildings’ modular construction system, which has been developing a circular timber construction system since 2014. The CLT modules are designed to be disassembled, allowing BLOK to be moved to its next location after Dutch Design Week.
Director Jurrian Knijtijzer refers to the modules as the framework of the pavilion. “All kinds of innovations find a place around that wooden shell. For us, building with wood has become second nature. Precisely because of that, BLOK had the flexibility to incorporate the innovations of all partners. At BLOK, innovation was the starting point.”
Jurrian compares the collaboration to a school of small fish. “Together, they form a big fish. There are many companies involved here, each with its own innovations. By working together, we’re better able to hold our own.”
Materials Become Neighbors
At Elementem’s woodworking factory in Hardenberg, circular materials, techniques, and designs literally come together. Manager Roy Hilberink: “At the detail level, materials that function perfectly well on their own suddenly have to work side by side. That’s exactly why BLOK is more than just a collection of sustainable products.”
Ron Schamp of Janssen de Jong: “Circular construction can only succeed if partners are involved from the start and make decisions together.”
