COVID-19: Finch Forward

Of course, we at Finch are also influenced by the Corona crisis. Fortunately, the design and marketing of modular buildings made of solid wood can also be done from home. In accordance with the RIVM guidelines, we have taken the following measures for the upcoming period:

  • All colleagues work from home
  • In physical arrangements with relationships, we don't shake hands
  • We keep appropriate distance of at least 1.5 meters
  • Our office in Amsterdam is only accessible by appointment for viewings

We will continue to be available by telephone at 020-8943431 and by email on info@finchbuildings.com.

And we are continuing our mission: a future in which buildings are a solution to the climate problem.

Start building residential studios Alkmaar

At the end of December 2019, our partner De Groot Vroomshoop started the production of the 38 solid wooden residential studios for Woonwaard in Alkmaar. Within 4 weeks all 38 studios were delivered ready-made and brought to the construction site in Alkmaar. Despite the February storm, the installation of the three building blocks took about 2 weeks. In the meantime, the building has been completed and the interior area is being tackled. The tenants will receive the key to their new home at the end of March.

Factory visits at De Groot Vroomshoop

The start of the construction of the residential studios for Woonwaard was a great opportunity to show the new production line to our relations and clients. In 4 days we have shown around 120 interested parties around Vroomshoop. With participants from housing associations, property developers, consultants, municipalities and a CPO, we can speak of a successful design. On to the next Tour de Vroomshoop!

Next stop: Gouda!

Our architects started this month to prepare the permit application for 60 houses for housing corporation Mosaic Wonen in Gouda. A plan has been developed for 14 Finch Studios and 46 Finch two-room houses on an old factory site on the Winterdijk. In addition, 10 modules are used as storage and laundromat, bringing the total number of modules in this project to 70. We'll keep you updated on the progress in Gouda!

Podcast with Holland Contech & Proptech

Jurrian Knijtijzer recently spoke with Wouter Truffino of HCPT about the importance of building with wood. What are the examples of biobased building and is it actually still appropriate to build fully with concrete and steel?

We have a new website!

In addition to our physical projects, we have also launched a new website this month. In addition to a completely new (responsive) design, the familiar URL finchbuildings.com can now find even more information about the team, our product and the services we offer. On the page 'Buildings' you can also see several examples of our realized and realized projects, as well as design studies. Take a look around!

Finch Inspiration

Kajstaden Sweden's tallest wooden building

An hour north of Stockholm at Lake Mälaren in Västerås,
C.F. Møller Architects has completed its project Kajstaden, the tallest wooden building in Sweden. This building is made entirely of CLT, the material we also use in our buildings.

In addition to building in wood, this building has several sustainable solutions. For example, a sedum roof has been installed to stimulate biodiversity and protect the roof from different weather conditions. There are also several electric car chargers installed in the parking garage and residents can use an electric boat to enjoy on a sunny day on the lake. A great example of a truly sustainable and biobased project.

The VolkerWessels forests

Our partner VolkerWessels will make at least 500 hectares of forest in the Netherlands climate-resistant over the next two years. Subsidiary Primum argues that the forest captures more CO2 and is more resistant to the effects of climate change by taking smart measures. VolkerWessels invests up to 100,000 euros in 'climate smart forest management'. The amount consists partly of a fixed contribution by VolkerWessels and partly of a doubling by VolkerWessels of voluntary contributions from employees. Every employee can support this initiative and for a donation of 10 euros 3 trees plant or for 25 euros even 8 trees. A great example of future-oriented investing!

Finch Facts

Fast, faster, fastest!

One of the great advantages of modular design and construction in the factory is the speed of realization. The lead time of a housing project in the Netherlands – from the very first idea to realisation – is an average of 7 years. A lot of time is spent in planning and decision-making and licensing procedures. The turnaround time of our recently completed project in Alkmaar was 3 years. That felt like a long period of time for us. However, based on the issue of the irrevocable building permit in August 2019, the actual realization time was only half a year, and that is actually quite fast!
