Number of modules
Together with De Groot Vroomshoop, BMB development and Wooncompagnie, we started the construction of M'DAM in February 2021 which was completed 9 months later! The M'DAM project consists of: 62 apartments for social buy, social rent and free sector buy with user surfaces of 50, 65 and 76 and 110 m2. The building is energy-neutral and will be modular with 106 modules of solid wood.
Location: Monnickendam
Client: BMB development
Initiator: Wooncompagnie/ BMB development
Status: Delivered 2021
Sector: Housing (social rental, social purchase and free sector purchase)
Number of dwellings: 62
Size: 5,430 m2 GLA
M'DAM is one of the first large-scale residential buildings in the Netherlands to consist almost entirely of Cross-laminated timber (CLT). Thanks to this innovative approach, we have achieved a negative carbon footprint, with total emissions being less than the carbon stored in the wood. For example, a 78 m² apartment in M'DAM stores as much CO₂ as is emitted on average by driving 45,000 kilometers. By using wood from sustainably managed European forests, we ensure that more trees are planted than cut down, contributing to a greener future.
The construction process was also a record for us. It took only seven months from prefabrication to on-site assembly. By building modularly with solid wood, we were able to minimize noise and visual pollution for local residents.
The 62 apartments are all fully electric. An air-water heat pump and solar panels ensure that energy is supplied sustainably. The building's high insulation value further improves energy efficiency resulting in lower energy costs for residents.
