First wood building apartments M'DAM installed

Special transport for largest wooden residential building in the Netherlands

Monnickendam - Today the first four timber construction apartments in project M'DAM arrived in Monnickendam. With a special transport, the prefabricated apartments were brought from the factory in Enschede to the construction site at the Pierebaan, where the apartments were put on the right place with a construction crane. In the coming weeks, all 62 apartments in total will be transported to the site and assembled into the largest solid wood residential building in the Netherlands. Project M'DAM is now truly becoming physically visible.

Right now the factory in Enschede is running at full capacity. For all 62 apartments, a complete construction process is underway in the two large production halls of De Groot Vroomshoop's factory. In the first phase of the production line, the homes are assembled resulting in an almost complete home including a bathroom. In the subsequent stages, amenities such as electricity, installations, floor layers and interior doors are built in and the homes are fitted with roofing. The final stage of prefabrication consists of assembling the galleries and balconies. A complete sustainable and fast construction process that takes place in one location.

Wood stores CO2

Wooden buildings are an important solution in the fight against climate change. Wood is the only building material that stores CO2. All apartments consist largely of solid wood (Cross Laminated Timber). An apartment of 78 m2, for example, stores as much CO2 as is emitted by 45,000 kilometers of car driving. M'DAM leads the way in modular and innovative construction with the lowest possible footprint. This timber building concept reduces CO2 emissions, making it much more sustainable and environmentally friendly than traditional construction projects.

Completion after summer

At the construction site, the final assembly takes place, after which all the houses are linked to form a U-shaped building. In addition to the wooden construction method, the facade of M'DAM also consists largely of wood, supplemented by traditional masonry and aluminum facade elements. Prefabrication in the factory and fast construction time on site will limit construction inconvenience on site. After the summer of 2021, M'DAM will be completed.

Expanding housing supply Waterland

The municipality of Waterland will soon be the first municipality in the Netherlands with a complete circular wooden residential building. The total plan consists of 21 social owner-occupied apartments and 21 free sector owner-occupied apartments sold to residents of the municipality of Waterland. There will also be 20 social rental apartments in the plan, which will be offered by housing corporation Wooncompagnie starting this summer.

Sustainable cooperation

M'DAM was developed by BMB development B.V. of Limmen (part of VolkerWessels). The building is a design by product developer and architect Finch Buildings of Amsterdam. Prefabrication and construction of the timber building concept is being carried out by De Groot Vroomshoop (also part of VolkerWessels). In the new factory in Enschede, a production line has been set up for the prefabrication of CLT (wooden) buildings. M'DAM is the first project to be produced on this line.
